Gearing up for the CILIPS Autumn Gathering

Here at CILIPS Central we’re busy putting together the arrangements for the ‘Autumn Gathering’ event which takes place at Carnegie Conference Centre, Dunfermline on October 27th.  What is the autumn gathering?  It’s an opportunity for CILIPS members, friends and colleagues to get together and connect to discuss ideas first generated at our earlier  annual Conference in Glasgow and to catch up with issues and developments before winter kicks in.  It promises to be a packed day and the programme is almost ready to publish so let me detail some of the highlights here.

There are three themes to the day – enhancing user experience, digital participation and boosting the library profile.  CILIPS President Chris Pinder requested a focus on regional groups who will host presentations alongside Branches and special interest groups.  Chris will also present CILIPS 2010 Honorary Members Awards at lunch. This year our honorary members are Sheila Cannell, Margaret Forrest, Ian Rankin and Charles Sweeney.

Our keynote speaker, John Holden, kicks off the day with a topical look at advocacy for libraries in tough economic times. John Holden is a visiting Professor at City University and was Head of Culture at Demos.  He’s published extensively on  the development of people and organisations in the cultural sector and has been involved in a number of library projects.

We’ve also got Christina Kelly from the PR Company Golley Slater who managed the recent highly successful ‘Ask Scotland’ launch for SLIC.  She’s coming along to discuss marketing techniques for libraries. Our Branches and Groups are providing a whole range of presentations during the day  including sessions on shared services, Web 2, library projects, user education, publishers and sustainability.

A special round table discussion is being organised  by  North East Branch to address how we raise CILIPS profile in the regions and everyone is looking forward to a very participative session with lots of ideas to help take us forward in difficult times. Talking of difficult times – well that’s just what Chris Pinder will be doing  – his address is about managing in hard times and that’s something  we all need to think about.

CILIPS has also organised a supplier exhibition to take place in the refreshment area which promises to be very busy and a second exhibition from Branches and Groups themselves in the reception area.  If you’d like to be part of either exhibition please get in touch with me for more details

You can book a place online for the autumn gathering at an earlybird price of only £45 to include lunch, all refreshments and a delegate pack.  With plentiful parking, a regular bus service from around the country including Glasgow and Edinburgh dropping off outside the Conference Centre as well as a train station 10 minutes walk away we’re anticipating a really high turnout for the event.

See you there!
